About Us

Opened in April of 1957, Ray's Western Wear and Saddlery is one of Chamberlain's oldest businesses. Ray Steckelberg purchased a men's clothing store on Main Street in downtown Chamberlain, South Dakota and sold horse tack in the basement. Ray kept the tack in the basement of the store until 1970 when the store and focus of the business was remodeled. The tack was moved to the main floor adding western wear from 1970 onward sticking with western lifestyle. Ray's youngest son, Duane, joined the business in 1974 and moved the store to a new location in Oacoma upon I-90 interstate in August 1996 to catch interstate traffic and travelers pulling horse trailers. Since then, the store has remained a family profession with Duane's wife, Sheryl, and granddaughter, Brooke, joining the action continuing Ray's legacy and the branding of South Dakota's Cowboy Store. Family owned for 65+ years and still going strong.
